Musical Accompaniment
Need a little musical masterful flow to get your body working for the Split Pillow Screening?

Visit the Challenge 2.0 homepage, which features a theme song from Swak One and MC Tony B. It's a little bit like Kool Keith meets Eminem meets high-impact flick-forming. Er...sort of.

Production for Challenge 2.0 was scheduled to take place on Chicago's North Side. Last year the producers were forced to manipulate through floats at the downtown Memorial Day Parade. The first night of Challenge 2.0 is dedicated to writing scripts, which are then handed over to other teams of filmmakers to shoot on day two and edit and post-produce on day three.

Because the topic and theme of each film will be inspired by a song that is played just prior to the writing stage, little, if any, preproduction will take place.

Which is, of course, the point.

"I'm kind of curious as to what our process will be like," says Ryan Stone, a local public relations executives that will be participating for the first time.

"The best thing to do is show up with a clear head and be well-rested. Maybe we can find a way to have somebody balance lawnmowers on their chin and lead to a good film that way."

Assuming everyone comes out in one piece, the June 3 screening will be presented by uPressplay, a Logan Square-based online media production and distribution company.

uPressPlay is a free, advertising-supported, resource that enables local producers to showcase their works on a site that attracts approximately 5,000 unique visitors per month.

"We're acting as masters of ceremonies for the show," said Thomas Doyle Piwnicki. "We look forward to introducing the films and providing opening schtick."

It remains to be seen how much influence any production from Challenge 2.0 will have on current and future filmmakers. Stephens believes the process of bringing scores of filmmakers together to engage his grand experiment will have its own legacy.

"One of my goals is to capture the sense of collaboration on Improv," he said. "I'm glad to be designing an event that will bring that into the fold."
